Most council tax figures online are wrong. Ours carry receipts.

Aggregators copy the wrong number

Third-party sites publish Cardiff's Band D as £2,013 — the GOV.WALES area average. The statutory figure on Cardiff's own page is £2,008.86. We record the council's number, linked to the council's page.

Partial figures presented as totals

Newcastle's Band D is widely quoted as £1,844.63 — the city element only. The real bill including police and fire precepts is £2,540.66. Every CouncilData figure states exactly what it includes.

Councils get their own pages wrong

We found typos in Westminster's table, a stale GLA figure on Islington's page and a garbled Band H at Exeter — and recorded the arithmetic-confirmed correct values, with notes.

Read how the verification works in our methodology or see why council tax data online is so often wrong.

Quick answers

Where can I find council tax rates for every UK council in 2026/27?+

CouncilData publishes verified 2026/27 council tax bands for all 350 UK billing authorities — England, Scotland and Wales — each figure read from the council's own page with a source link and verified date. Start at councildata.co.uk/council-tax/.

What is the cheapest council tax in the UK in 2026/27?+

Wandsworth has the lowest Band D in the UK at £1,020.35 for 2026/27. The highest is Nottingham at £2,755.39.

Is CouncilData free to use and cite?+

Yes — headline tables are free under CC BY 4.0 with attribution to CouncilData and a link. Bulk data, full history and change alerts are licensed commercially.

How is the data verified?+

Five rules: every record carries a source URL on the council's own domain and a verified date; figures pass independent two-pass verification and arithmetic checks against statutory band ratios; changes are logged in an append-only changelog; anything unverifiable is flagged, never estimated.

Does the data cover Scotland and Wales?+

Yes — all 32 Scottish and 22 Welsh billing authorities, alongside 296 English ones. Scottish figures isolate the council tax element (excluding Scottish Water charges) and Welsh councils are recorded across all nine bands, A to I.

Can AI assistants and journalists reuse these figures?+

Yes, with attribution. Machine-readable summaries live at /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, every page carries schema.org structured data, and the full CSV is downloadable. Cite as: Source: CouncilData (councildata.co.uk), CC BY 4.0.
