Band checker

The full 2026/27 band table for any UK council. Bands run A–H in England and Scotland and A–I in Wales — here's how they work. Once you know your band, the calculator breaks your bill into monthly and weekly amounts, or compare councils side by side.

Every figure links back to the council's own page — browse all 350 councils or read about how we verify.

Frequently asked

How do I find out my council tax band?+

Your band is on your council tax bill, or look it up free by address on gov.uk (England and Wales) or the Scottish Assessors portal. Once you know it, this checker shows what every band costs in your council for 2026/27, with the council's own source page linked.

What are the council tax bands in the UK?+

England and Scotland use eight bands, A to H, based on April 1991 property values; Wales uses nine bands, A to I, based on 2003 values. Each band is a fixed fraction of Band D — A pays 6/9ths of D, H pays double — so one headline figure defines a council's whole table.

Which council tax band is the cheapest?+

Band A is always the cheapest band within any council — two-thirds of that council's Band D. Across councils, the same band varies enormously: Band D itself ranges from £1,028.21 in Wandsworth to £2,765.02 in Dorset in 2026/27.

Can my council tax band be wrong?+

Yes — bands rest on valuations done in the early 1990s (2003 in Wales) and errors persist. If identical neighbouring homes sit in a lower band, check our guide to challenging your band; the process is free through the VOA or Scottish Assessors.
